Here is a question…what is the most important factor when you build a website? Is it to get the design and layout right so it conforms to all the pyscological tests or to ensure it is seo formatted correctly with keywords in the tags and title? Well, it’s little bits of a lot of things but there is one overriding aspect of a website that will ultimately determine whether you get the visitor to take the action you want them to take or not.
Before I reveal this crucial build a website tip, I can let you know that if you get it incorrect, you will be immediately writing off over 80% of visitors from taking the action you try and direct them to take. So what is it you ask?
The headline. Short and sweet. If you do not get the headline correct, then you can kiss goodbye to the vast majority of visitors to your website doing anything else but clicking the ”x”. Think about this for a minute…you are looking through a newspaper. Why do you stop and read the item? Is it because the headline caught your attention, aroused curiosity and made you stay on the page and start reading?
Well…that is exactly what your headline on your website should be doing too. What is the one purpose of a headline? To get the reader to read the next part of the text…whether that is a sub headline, saluation or first line of text, or perhaps an introductory video or audio.
Get the headline right and you have just climbed over a huge hurdle. So how can you tell if the headline is correct? Test and test and test again. To get to a headline you think may work you should have written another 99 of them. Yes, that is correct. You should be writing about 100 versions and then slowly start to eliminate them until you have a top ten. Then test, test and test again.
I had the incredible opportunity to spend a weekend course with Ted Nicholas, one of the greatest direct marketers ever and a master of copywriting. What a priviledge and education. And I now understand the importance of getting the headline right.
